Tom Ford // Lip Contour Duos
Since Tom Ford's beauty line never included a lip liner before, I was very curious about this Lip Contour Duo which includes a coordinated liner with lipstick. I pre-ordered them without seeing the colors in person, and I think I picked pretty well considering. (I usually go for nudes, darks and bright reds so I was super happy when I got them.)
Before I get into the nitty gritty, I love the packaging. Very rarely does Tom Ford not get their packaging right and this is no exception. The liner twists up AND down, which I love. I'm always troubled when it's one way since I tend to twist up too much product. The lipstick is at the other end, slides right out and looks like a slim lipstick. Love it. Good size, travel friendly, beautiful and practical.
Here is a description of the Lip Contour Duo from the Tom Ford site:
"TOM FORD INNOVATION MEETS LIP ARTISTRY WITH A DUAL LIP COLOR AND SHAPING TOOL. ON ONE END, THE SLIM AND SLEEK PENCIL FEATURES A LIP SHAPER TO ENHANCE AND DEFINE LIPS. ON THE OPPOSITE END IS A FULL-COVERAGE, SLIM STICK LIP COLOR CONCEALED INSIDE. USE THE LIGHTER SHADE OF LIP SHAPER TOGETHER WITH THE DEEPER LIP COLOR TO ADD DIMENSION, SHAPE AND CREATE AN OMBRE EFFECT TO YOUR LIPS, FROM SUBTLE CONTOUR TO HIGH-DEFINITION CONTRAST."
To be honest, I was a little confused by this description. I would normally use lip liner as the dark shade, to outline the lips and use the lipstick and maybe some lip gloss to keep the center of my lips lighter. But sure enough, when I swatched these Duos, the lip liners were not only a shade or two lighter than the lipstick, but were also glittery to help reflect light and make your lips appear fuller.
As I tried these on my lips I noticed that the slight shade difference between the two ends wasn't prominent enough to actually contour anything. For the Public Display colorway, I put on the lipstick first. And then tried to color over it with the contour end at the center of my lips.
The contour effect is imperceivable, unfortunately. And, the glittery bits really aren't visible enough to make a difference in terms of contouring and what bits are present end up wherever they want.
For the Show It Off colorway, I put on the lipstick just at the corners of my mouth, and then added the contour to the centers of my lips, only having them blend a bit where they met. Again, no real contour or ombre effect.
And for the Devil Inside colorway, I used it without a thought to contouring, applying the lipstick on and then using the contouring side as a regular lip liner. Looks the same as the other two swatches.
I'm definitely disappointed in the contour aspect of this product. But if I ignore their attempt at making this some sort of contouring tool, it's great. I love the lipsticks - they're so comfortable on the lips, highly pigmented and beautiful shades. The lip liner is fun with just the smallest hint of glitter and really stays put. I can't ask for much more, other than a decent description of the product.
