Year in Review // 2016 Makeup Favorites
Since I started this blog less than a year ago, it took me quite some time to figure out whether or not I wanted to write a "Best of 2016" post. In the end, I couldn't help myself and I hope you don't mind indulging me. While I may have started this blog in March of last year, I had rekindled my love affair with makeup more than a year ago, and it seems I've racked up quite a few favorites to mention. So here are my Top 16 from last year (in no particular order)... I can't believe how hard it was to come up with this list!
When I didn't have time to think about my makeup, I always grabbed this foundation. Light coverage, beautiful finish, always dependable. I don't think I'll ever be without this one.
I fell in love with Surratt Beauty this past year. Yes, the packaging is beautiful but I've been impressed with a majority of the things from their line and this foundation is at the very top. I was really turned off by the built-in brush applicator, but the brush is fine and I've actually come to like it. The finish is a bit heavier than the Koh Gen Do, so if I feel I need a little more help, I gravitate towards this foundation. The satin-y, skin-like finish is so absolutely stunning.
This has been my go-to brow product and I can't seem to find anything close. I have fairly thick, slightly unruly brows and the Boy Brow tames them without making them crunchy and adds just enough color and density to my brows without them overpowering my face.
I've used this powder to set my undereyes 99% of the time this past year. I tried loose powders and the effect is way too matte and cakey. I love how light and fine this powder is, and I'm also a big fan of it being pressed vs. loose.
This is the perfect concealer! It's hydrating, light in texture, but has great coverage and it never creases, moves, fades or sinks into my fine lines. I've tried a few other concealers this past year and they've all managed to age my undereyes. This is the only one that's managed to make me look more flawless and awake. It's absolute perfection.
Victoria Beckham x Estee Lauder // Highlighter in 01 Modern Mercury
It seems cruel to mention this limited edition, sold out item, but I couldn't leave it off in good conscience. It is the perfect middle of the road highlighter for me. Not too subtle, not too reflective. Not too warm, not too cool. This particular shades to meld right into all my blushes too. I never have that striped look across my cheek when I use this.
When I want an amped up, super highlighter, I reach for this one. The golden peach tone is more gold than the Modern Mercury, so it's great for evening looks or whenever you want to make a bolder statement. The powder is so smooth and silky, and it's ridiculously pigmented.
Here's another product that I reach for mindlessly. If I don't have time to play around with makeup, or I'm just rushing out the door, I always reach for this liner. The shade is perfect, and I like the staying power without it being too matte and drying.
I feel like I'm cheating by mentioning this palette since I got it in December, but it's made such an impression on me! I find myself reaching for it constantly, and I'm completely smitten with the two blush shades. I love all of the Hourglass powders, but this particular palette is really impressive.
I'm on my second bottle of this liquid magic. Occasionally when I feel my complexion needs a little oomph, I'll add one pump of this into my foundation and mix it in. Adds such a lovely glow and is a nice subtle "corrector" for when I'm feeling a little sallow. It's just gorgeous.
While I haven't used this face palette in awhile, I was almost using it exclusively over the summer. If I didn't know what to pack, I packed this. It had me covered. The three products are perfect for my skin tone and work so beautifully together.
The perfect nude. And the perfect formula. I love love love these Ultra-Rich Lip Colors from Tom Ford. They feel so good on the lips, yet wear like a regular lipstick. And this color is my perfect everyday nude. Stunning!
OK, last TF product, I promise. But what can I say? They're so good! I had a really tough time picking out a bronzer. I'm not very monogamous when it comes to them. I have my favorites for when I want subtle. I have others for when I want something with a little more warmth. But this one seems to be an all-around great color and finish for me. It's got a few gold shimmers and the color isn't too orange-y.
Towards the end of this year, so many amazing palettes came out and I fell in love with so many. But I went with this one because I've had it longer, and have really had time to play with it and know for certain that I do indeed love it. I love the quality, the colors, and the fact that a highlighter and contour are included. It's such a great all-around, everyday, solid palette.
This is a bold statement, but I feel like this should be in everyone's collection. It's the basis for all eye looks! And it's filled in the gaps for me on so many occasions with palettes that were maybe missing a brow highlight shades, or a dark, rich brown or black color. This is a workhorse of a palette.
Another tough decision... there were so many Surratt Beauty lip products and other moisturizing lip products that I loved this past year, that I nearly tossed a coin to figure out my absolute fave. But it came down to this one. It's a great, comfortable texture and formula and the color is a great nude. It's deeper than the TF Revolve Around Me so it works well when I'm feeling a bit more dramatic.
There are so many others I'd love to include! But, I have to say that these were my go-to, most-reached-for, favorites from 2016. If last year was any indication, this year is going to be absolutely epic when it comes to exciting new releases. Hope you're all having a wonderful start to 2017! xoxo
